Finishing Cut Directions

The Plansee-Tizit right hand, left hand and neutral tool tips supplied by Emco with the lathes are designed to cut in any direction. Thus, a surfacing finishing cut with a right hand tool need not be in the conventional right-to-left direction but can be the other way.

Cut direction does need careful planning. For example, a facing finishing cut should preferably move in towards the centre of the billet and not out from the centre. The reason is that there is only 3 degrees clearance angle between the tool tip and the face of the billet. Plunging in at the centre of the billet face can produce a wide cut line and cause chatter and worse. If a cut has to be done this way, Emco recommend that the depth of cut should be no more than 0.3mm.

To avoid dimensional errors due to leadscrew backlash, try to make all cuts in the -X and -Z directions.

The Emco training manual deals with and illustrates these matters in some depth and you are advised to study and apply these pages. You will be rewarded by better machining and products.

There are turning tool holders and tips available with other clearance angles. Please refer to the Sandvik Coromant and Plansee Tizit catalogues. Both companies have web sites:
